Hot Potatoes

Nowadays, we have a lot of interesting ICT tools; however I try to find the best options in relation to the learning process given by the teachers at the school. That is the reason for choosing this tool called "Hot potatoes".

I could not find the date of his creation, but after some research, I have fallen in love with this tool. Hot Potatoes is a robust set of classroom activity tools that teachers can use to construct quizzes, matching activities, and crossword puzzles.

Hot Potatoes is an open-source software program that can be downloaded here.

This software suite is a set of six authoring tools that allow you to create different types of interactive quizzes.  The quizzes are viewed using a web browser. Each program can produce a different type of quiz:

JCloze – is used to make gap-fill or cloze exercises.

JCross – is used to make crossword exercises.

JMatch – is used to create matching exercises.

JMix – is used to make jumble exercises.

JQuiz – is a tool for making question-based exercises. Each quiz can consist of an unlimited number of questions.

I consider this tool quite difficult for our students. Nevertheless, the teacher is who are going to use this software in order to provide students with some activities. Our aim with this tool is to work on reading and a little bit of speaking.

In this entry, I am not going to provide an activity design for a specific class. On the contrary, I am going to add some interesting activities that I want to probe in my class, but you could also use them in your class if you really like them.

Firstly, I have thought about an activity related to "JQuiz" which is the tool for making question-based exercises. As an introduction, we are going to talk with our students about a theme that they have to study for an exam or project. So, we are going to do a kind of oral exam, but as a big group, without dividing our class into small groups.

After talking about the topic and doing some reflection, we are going to introduce our tool today. Moreover, we should introduce that they are not going to create school material with this tool, they are going to experiment with it by doing the exercises that we have designed previously to the class.

I have chosen "JQuiz" because you can create multiple-choice questions, so this is going to help the teacher see if the students have understood the theme well. Additionally, this is going to support the teacher in order to aim the questions of the exam or project.

To sum up, we are going to use this tool, like Kahoot, in order to do a summary of our student's knowledge before an exam or project. Moreover, this tool is going to provide us interesting information about our students strengths and weaknesses.

Another activity that we could do before an important event in class like a big project or an exam, is one using "JCross". With this tool, we are going to create a crossword exercise that could be interesting in order to revise some keywords.

In case we want to work on speaking, we could divide the class into pairs and give one question to each pair. After that, they have to write some questions related to the question that they have. The aim of this activity is to encourage our students to read these questions aloud without feeling embarrassed or anxious. Additionally, we are working on the reinforcement of the feeling of belonging to a group, which I consider a very important value in a class.

In conclusion, I really like this software, and I consider that it has endless possibilites for us to work with it in class. So, to all the teachers who have read this entry, I highly recommend this ICT tool. At least give it one chance, and I am sure that it is not going to disappoint you.

Funbrain

Similar to the previous entry, this ICT tool was created a lot of years ago, exactly in 1997. However, this does not mean that is it a bad tool or antiquated. Quite the opposite, this tool counts with recent updates and with several very positive opinions from teachers and parents.

The name of this application is "Fun brain", and it has been the leader in free educational games for kids since 1997. I have selected this tool because it offers a lot of different resources like games, books, comics, and videos in order to develop skills in math, reading, problem-solving and literacy.

So, today we are going to work on reading and math, which I consider key elements in the learning process of our students. Moreover, with today's entrance I have already to work all the linguistic skills. Therefore, I want to work in another field in education, like math.

I have to admit, too, that I have found it very difficult to search a tool that works in different fields of the learning process. I consider that working transversally with students in our class could lead to a lot of advantages for our children's learning process. For that reason, I chose "Fun brain".

Therefore, we are going to do the next activity in our class in order to work on reading, speaking, writing and math, and also establish a relation between the four of them.

Class

We are working with a fifth grade in primary group, which has 16 students.

Material

Laptops, whiteboard, projector and papers.

Activity 1 hour

Introduction 10 minutes

In this part, we are going to introduce the activity that we are going to do to all students. Therefore, the teacher is going to show with the projector all the different steps that our students have to do in the tool. So, we are going to show them that they have to write "Fun brain" in google and we must be sure that our students enter in the correct link.

Math part 15 minutes

Firstly, we are going to explain that they have to select their grade out of the different options which appear down to the phrase "Browse by Grade". Once they have selected their grade, we are going to divide our class into pairs. Moreover, we are going to provide each pair with a game related to math or problem-solving.

To sum up, in this part, they only have to play the game that we have previously selected for the class. It is important that the games we select work math and are adapted to our students input.

Reading part 15 minutes

Secondly, we are going to work on reading, so we have to explain to our pupils how they enter the reading part. It is an easy process like the previous one because they only have to select the menu that is at the top and, afer that, the reading part.

At the moment they are inside the reading part, they are going to enter the games selected by the teacher in order to play them and extract different knowledge about reading.

Conclusion

These two activities are thought to put the student at the center of the learning process. I mean to focus on the student. Because of that, the teacher's role is to guide the students through the activity, but they have to play the different games themselves in pairs.

I consider this part important because it works on autonomy and the active participation of the student and is going to keep hooking the student in the class. Once we reach this characteris, our learning process will probably change from the one we had previously.

Moreover, we can still give students more importance by letting them select the games that they are going to play. But, we have to explain to them that they have to choose the games related to their age and grade, paying attention to the numbers that appear on the cover of the games.

Writing and speaking part 20 minutes

In this final part, our students are going to be divided into four groups, so we are going to mix two of the pairs we have done previously. They are going to do two different tasks. The first one is to decide which game they like the most in the group, or if they can not think of one, to design one related to the games they have played.

So, to make this process easier for our students, we are going to give them paper, and they are going to write on it the most important ideas they thought.

Finally, they are going to explain to the rest of the class what they have selected, and their classmates are going to give them a mark. If the teacher sees some problems, he will help the students who are in trouble.

YouTube

Regarding this second entry, I have chosen another typical ICT tool, called "YouTube". It is true that this one was created in 2005, and a great percentage of teachers are going to know about it.

Firstly, I have to say that this ICT tool is a very popular and free video sharing website that allows registered users to upload and share video clips online. Moreover, to watch the videos, it is not mandatory to register.

Even though it was created in 2005, I have seen a lot of big chances regard to the way that this application worked in the first years of its creation and how it works nowadays. During 2005-2010, YouTube was like a beta, an application that was suffering changes in order to give the user the best experience. However, the years were going ahead and the application was improving and improving, until it was like it is nowadays.

I really got inspired by the creators of YouTube because they started at the bottom with big expectations, and they finally reached the top with their app. So, to me, it is an inspiration to see how they, in the end, could fulfill his dream.

Regard to this entry, I have chosen this ICT tool because I have a lot of experience with it, similar to Kahoot. Therefore, I know how it works, and I can use it in a classroom in order to get the best learning process for my students. In this case, we are going to work on two linguistic skills, which are reading and writing.

We are going to do an activity that involves the two linguistic skills mentioned previously. This activity is divided into three parts, which are the following ones:

Class

We are working with a sixth grade in primary group, which has 20 students.

Length

We are going to spend 60 minutes,20 minutes in first part and 20 minutes in the second part and 20 minutes in the third part.

Material

Computer, whiteboard, projector, papers and the next YouTube channel: @AprendemosJuntos.

First part: reading 20 minutes

We are going to show all the students the different videos that we are going to watch. All the videos used in this first part are extracts from the channel "AprendemosJuntos". I have selected this channel because it is focused on education, and has English and Spanish videos.

Therefore, we are going to see in class one video or some clips of it, depending on the input level, the motivation and the previous knowledge of our students. For watching the videos, we are going to use YouTube with the option of subtitles. We use this feature in order to keep our students hooked on the class and to make the process of understanding the general message of the video easier.

Second part: writing 20 minutes

After watching and reading the videos, students are going to write, in turns, words or phrases that they do not understand on the whiteboard.

When all students have their questions answered, they are going to sit in groups of four. Then they are going to write down two ideas. The first one related to what he/she liked the most about the video or his favorite idea mentioned, and the second was a summary of the general ideas of the video.

Third part: conclusion 20 minutes

We are going to give the pairs of students all the video transcripts, in order to compare what they have written with what the video really says. So, we are going to give them time to read and compare everything.

Also, if we have time, it would be great to do an oral activity of their opinions about the activity and their expectations before doing it.

Kahoot

In this first entry, I am going to talk about an ICT tool that I really like to use in the classroom with students. The name of the tool is "Kahoot", and I guess that a lot of teachers know it. This ICT tool is a free student-response tool that gives a lot of facilities for creating quizzes, discussions and collecting survey data.

Moreoever, the questions are projected on a shared screen, while players answer the questions with their smartphone, tablet, or computer; creating a social, fun and game-like environment. Kahoot allows for the design of multiple-choice quizzes as well as polls and surveys that populate on-the-spot data; the quiz questions and polls stimulate quick instructional decisions as well as whole-class discussion.

It is clear that it is not very new in comparison with other tools, but I think that a correct use of it could lead the students to a well-rounded learning process and an improvement of their English linguistic skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

In this case, we are going to work on their reading and the pronunciation with an oral activity that I have designed called "Pablo Picasso". (Video about Pablo Picasso: https://bit.ly/47oMbRZ).

First of all, the aim of this activity is for the children in the class to work on listening comprehension and on articulation and pronunciation. To reach our objective, we are going to use an audio about Pablo Picasso’s life. It is a video, but we are going to use only the audio, to work about listening, because the images are not necessary to get well the narration. The audio is a summary of Pablo Picasso’s life and some curious information about him. I have chosen this famous painter because it is an inspiring story about an artist that reach his goal of becoming one of the most famous painters in the world. Regarding language, the audio is clear and easy to understand. Moreover, the person who reads is a kid that makes it more easily for children. The vocabulary is not very difficult, so the kids are going to understanding it. Also, the story has music too, which does not affect to the understood of the story. In our case, we are not going to use the images of the video because the script does not rely that much on the images and the children will imagine it while listening to the audio.

Firstly, we are going to do a multiple-choice exercise in order to expose students to two outputs: the same word written and spoken. This will help to do the last activity, which is about pronunciation. That is because they are going to be exposed to the word in two different ways, helping them with the pronunciation of the word.

We are working with a fourth grade in primary group, which has 20 students who have been together for almost like two or three years, so they know each other and have a good relationship. The class is arranged forming a three-sided square with the desks, so the pupils can easily see each other. In front of this three-side square, we have the projector. In the case of the teacher’s desk, it is located in the right side of the classroom, in order to not interfere with the projector and the information display on the whiteboard.

 Length

We are going to spend one 50 minutes session to these two activities.

 Materials

Computer, speakers, projector, photocopies with question for activity one and four whiteboard markers.

Introduction to the task and warm up 10 minutes

We are going to star the class with the usual routine, writing the date together on the whiteboard and talking about the weather and our today feelings. Then we will ask the children if they know what a painter is. Then we will talk about the labour of a painter, some painter examples and if someone of their family, friends or people they know is a painter. After that, we are going to continue saying that today we are going to listen a story about a painter who fulfils his dream of becoming one of the most famous painters in history: Pablo Picasso.

First activity: listening comprehension 20 minutes

We are going to create a multiple-choice exercise with Kahoot in which children are going to choose the correct answer out of the four options given. Before the first listening, we conduct a pre-listening task, so we are going to read the questions all together in order to clarify all the expressions and words given. Moreover, this will help students to be aware of the information they have to look for in the listening. The questions are easy and accurately reproduce what the audio says, therefore most of the answers should be answered without too much hassle. After that, students should be prepared enough for the second activity. The audio is going to be played twice, so the students have time to check their answers and complete the ones that may still be missing after the first listening.

Questions for the multiple-choice exercise:

💓) Guerrilla

💙) Gernika

💛) Guepardo

💚) Guinea

In order to clear things up, I have to say that I have chosen these heart emojis to illustrate the color or the four options given in the Kahoot app.

What is more, the answers are going to be checked as a class with the participation of the kids and the teacher who acts like a guide, instead of individually as it would be too time consuming.

Second activity: pronunciation 20 minutes

For this second activity our aim is that kids work on their pronunciation. For this purpose, we are going to combine running dictation and Chinese whispers. We will divide the class into five teams; therefore, each time are going to have four members. We are going to play four rounds. For each round, the team will form a line and, starting with the last student in the line, the teacher will whisper the same sentences to all the teams.

Each team member will have to whisper the sentence to the student who is in front of him until the fist one, who will have to go to the whiteboard and write the sentence whispered. We will repeat this four times, so that by the end of the activity each team will have written four sentences. Also, each student will have whispered four sentences and wrote one.

Students will have to make an effort to collect the teacher’s output, the whisper and also, to transfer it onto the next student. They know that the outcome of the whole team also depends on their individual performance, so this is going to make them want to be as focused as possible in order to achieve the goal. This aspect gives them a main role to the students in leading the activity. We are going to correct the mistakes together and the team which has the most correct answers are going to choose a game to bring outside for the playground time.

This second activity allows us to see what pronunciation aspects of our students are weaker and what we must stress when speaking, so their English improves when it comes to fluency and pronunciation. Some sentences may reach the whiteboard unaltered and others may suffer more changes, depending on the level of difficulty of each sentence. The sentences will be taken directly from the video, so students are going to been exposed to them twice (first with the video and then with the teacher’s whisper) and in some cases three times (video, activity 1 and whisper).

Sentences to be used

His father took him to Madrid to visit its most famous musem: El Prado

The world was not ready for his style

The result was as playful as a little kid’s drawing

It was the most moving anti-war painting the world had ever seen

Finally, I would like to add that I have tried to combine traditional material with ICT Tools by using the whiteboard and the app "Kahoot". I consider this a key factor because traditional materials are commonly substituted with ICT, so it is necessary to work with it too.

This feature could be dangerous, too, because it can change the view of traditional materials. Nowadays, children who are in schools and are “native digital” are born with technology, so it will be difficult to use traditional ways of learning and get them motivated and implicated.
